Choppette

$60.00 – $250.00

Adopt A Dolphin – Choppette

Species: Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus)

Age Class: Adult

Sex: Female

First identified by researchers: 3rd December 2010

Location: Gold Coast – Southern Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia

Choppette (ID#10) is an adult female Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin who is resident to the Southern Moreton Bay and Gold Coast-Broadwater region. Choppette is over 30 years of age and is part of a tightly bonded female community of dolphins that live in this region. Choppette is a survivor and a patient, attentive mother. She is an expert at foraging in the estuarine waters of the Gold Coast-Broadwater and is often seen teaching her calves to forage along the channels, seagrass beds and the edge of mangrove forests. She can be easily identified by the distinct damage on her dorsal fin. It is likely that Choppette lost the top of her dorsal fin and tail fluke as a result of a fishing line entanglement. She has also survived at least two shark attacks and at least one boat strike. Her dolphin community is very vulnerable due to the negative impacts from boating and fishing activities, pollution, habitat degradation and climate change.
