Adopt A Dolphin – CJ

Species: Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus)

Age Class: Juvenile

Sex: Male

Born in May 2019, CJ (ID#669) is a very boisterous young male. He is the son of Choppette (ID#10) and is regularly seen hunting with his mother in the estuarine waters of Southern Moreton Bay and the Gold Coast-Broadwater. CJ is adventurous and very social, often initiating social play with other pod members. At 2 months of age, CJ was hit by a boat and the propeller caused the large cuts across his back. He was very lucky to have survived these injuries. The injury has left a distinct split in his dorsal fin making him easy to identify. CJ was dependent on his mother for food and protection until at least 4 years of age. Once weaned, he will enter his teenage years and, like other males, form a male alliance made up of other males he is closely bonded with. By 8-10 years of age, he will be fully grown and ready to leave his mother’s pod. CJ and the rest of his pod, are very vulnerable due to their exposure to different threats from human activities including boating and fishing activities, pollution, habitat degradation and climate change

First identified by researchers: 13rd May 2019

Location: Gold Coast – Southern Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia
