Scarlet
$60.00 – $250.00
Adopt A Dolphin:
Scarlet is an adult female Australian humpback dolphin that was identified in May 2015. Scarlet calls Moreton Bay her home and is often seen off Amity Point, North Stradbroke Island.
When we first met Scarlet, she had a large healing wound on the left side of her body and she also had lots of rake marks (bite marks from other dolphins) on her dorsal fin. Scarlet approached us and rested next to the research boat for some time; an unusual behaviour for this species that are usually very shy. We noticed when she surfaced that she also has a missed tip of her upper rostrum (beak) from an old injury she acquired some years ago.
Despite her misfortunes, Scarlet gave birth to a new calf days after we met her. Only hours old at sunset on 9th June 2015 the calf was barely able to swim as Scarlet circled close to the boat with three other dolphins. For the next 3-4 years, Scarlet will be dedicated to teaching her young calf all it needs to know to survive including how to find food and its place in the dolphin society.
